The Barossa Valley is widely acknowledged as one of Australia's greatest producers of fine wines and the home of the world's best Shiraz. As the 'Icon of the Barossa', Chateau Tanunda is one of the top wineries in the region, and holds the claim to being the oldest known Chateau in Australia. The Chateau is thought to have established first plantings and a winery sometime in the 1840s and, in its prime, was boasted to be the largest winery in the Southern Hemisphere. Having long since fallen into disrepair due to abandonment, the winery has been enjoying an accelerating return to the glory days under the custodianship of the Gebber family since 1998. John, the patriarch of the family, is said to have laid eyes on the graceful ruin on a bike ride one morning - and bought the property outright the very next day! John himself comes from a long history of winemaking, stretching back to 1805, and saw the restoration of this beautiful property as a wonderful challenge as he brings the Chateau back to its iconic status as a giant in the Barossa region.
